In Southern Palawan, an area predominantly inhabited by Muslims, a FRE (Friendship, Revival, and Evangelism) Camp was held in Iraan, Rizal from June 23-29, 2024. The event brought together over 500 young people, both Adventist and non-Adventist and resulted in 39 individuals giving their hearts to Jesus through baptism. Notably, four of these were Muslim young people.
The camp was honored to have Pastor Ron Genebago, the Youth Director of the Southern Asia-Pacific Division, the regional office of the Adventist Church in Southeast Asia, as the guest speaker. His presence was complemented by Dexter James Salva, a dedicated missionary from Philippine Amazing Facts Center of Evangelism, who led the morning devotionals that set the spiritual tone each day. Throughout the week, Genebago and Salva delivered messages encouraging participants to live out their faith, following the Masterβs example.
One of the campβs goals was to encourage the young people to engage in ministry by inviting their friends. Over 60 non-Adventists attended and expressed appreciation for the campβs inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. They noted that, despite differing beliefs, they felt accepted and valued.
Adeel Ali* a young Muslim delegate, shared, βI had a hard time convincing my parents to let me join the camp because it would last a whole week. It took a lot of discussion and consideration, but eventually, my parents agreed and allowed me to attend.β Reflecting on his experience, he added, βDespite the initial challenge in gaining permission, attending the camp was completely worthwhile. The friendships, lessons learned, and engaging in community service made it an invaluable week.β
Ali* repeatedly mentioned the βsense of belongingβ he felt and experienced during the camp. This sense of acceptance is one of the camp’s primary objectives β for the attendees to live out the Biblical principle the Master Himself exemplified and taught in John 13: 34-35, βLove one another as I have loved you. By this everyone will know you are my disciples: if you love one another.β
He expressed that one of the most meaningful aspects of the camp was the genuine friendships and support formed. He was touched by the kindness and generosity shown by the participants.
The event aimed to pave the way for the young people to become friendlier Adventists, embracing differences just as the Master did, who came in personal contact with men and women and was a friend to everyone.
