Growing in God's Mission 2018

By Nelson G. Castillo/ TMary Jane A. Zabat

Here are the highlights of the programs and activities conducted by the North Philippine Union Conference Education Department.

TOTAL TEACHER INVOLVEMENT IN CARE GROUPS AND EVANGELISTIC CAMPAIGNS are bringing new believers to Christ for the past months and still ongoing. The Philippines for Christj came just in time to move our teachers to live, love and lift the mission with church members, ministers, and church leaders. There are those who took a stand to speak the good news through evangelistic meetings while many of them are active participants in the nightly meetings.

NPUC BIBLE BASED CURRICULUM WRITING continues and is about to be completed.
It is a fact that teachers have the busiest life. Just to think of the many forms and paper works they have to accomplish every day, top it all with students of various behavior and multiple intelligences, teachers really have no time to spend for other things. Teaching is life and demands the entire being of a person, his undivided heart, and more so his available resources. But their desire to be of use for a worthy project, which will be an instrument of change for our young people today and tomorrow, is such that they willingly gave up their vacation to be secluded for a week.

It was on April 15-20, 2018 at LMS, Bugtong, Lipa City, that they were called together to write our curriculum. The Lord has a thousand ways to fulfill His promise and supply our needs. By God's grace 21 made it complete the curriculum map. The good news is that this coming school year the NPUC will pilot the use of this curriculum map for the benefit of our students and teachers ensuring a distinctively Adventist Curriculum.

TEXTBOOK WRITING has come at the time it was not expected. NPUC Education department and Curriculum Committee thought of doing it after the completion of curriculum map and modules but it is a God-impressed vision of NPUC administrators and the SSD Education department to begin the work. Last August 27, 2018, the orientation for prospective writers/authors was held followed by a two-day meeting in SSD on September 12 and 13 to set the direction and share the vision to the tri-union prospective textbook authors. Subjects such as English, Filipino, Social Studies and Kindergarten were assigned to NPUC while AUP Elementary Mathematics textbook will be adopted as well as the Kindergarten books of Mary May Angeles, a minister's wife from CLC. It was October 7 when the seminar-workshop took place to equip the authors in the writing process. 40 educators commit to becoming authors of those textbooks. Writing is now going on and will be continued in in-house writing this summer 2019.

NPUC ACCREDITORS' CERTIFICATION is one-of-its-kind training held last June 20, 2018, for those who engage in the evaluation of schools. It is to enhance the technical skills of the evaluators in its process to a more objective approach. The workshop was also provided to give them an experience on the decorum during the interview and the how's in writing report.

EDUCATION ADVISORY MEETINGS AND SCHOOLS EVALUATION are a regular itinerary of the department. Every year, two advisory meetings are held to meet the superintendents and academy principals for policy review, new program dissemination, clarification, and planning. On the other hand, AAA visits were conducted to two (2) academies - Tirad and CAA of MPM for interim visits, four (4) academies for the full visits such as NELA Academy, PCA, CLAA, and NVAC Academy and thirty-nine (39) elementary schools from all the seven missions and conferences went through accreditation.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CERTIFICATION is expected to start this December break for NELM and NLM teachers to provide the skills, strategies, and approaches to Kindergarten classes. At the maximum, the certification will serve 25 to 30 teachers for two to three weeks on a crash course arrangement.

SPECIAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATION will be jointly conducted by SCLC and CLC as per AUP schedule and is expected to certify 30 teachers. This would equip them with the necessary skills, approaches, and strategies to teach students with special needs in a Christ-centered environment.

The work will not end until Christ's character is reflected on everyone, as teachers together with the church live in faith, follow His steps, and seek souls to save. Praise and glory to God! His enduring love is making all these to happen in His time.
